About Pile Pairs
Pile Pairs is our own clutter matching puzzle. Round tokens lie in a messy heap, piled over each other. Tap a token to pick it up, then tap its twin, the token with the same picture in the same colour and size, and both lift off the heap. Clear every token to win.
There is no tray to fill and no grid. Any token that shows can be tapped, even if only a thin edge peeks out from under the others, so the puzzle is in spotting twins in the clutter and in working out which tokens to lift to uncover the ones you need. The picked token gets a gold ring around its whole outline, even the part that is still covered. Two tokens that don't match add three seconds to your clock, and pairs found quickly one after another build a combo with a rising chime.
Every heap is built so that it can always be cleared. Each kind of token comes in exactly one pair, and the game deals the heap from a plan in which every pair shows at the moment it is needed, so whatever order you play in there is always a pair in sight. You never get stuck and there is no losing, only the clock.
There are 200 levels, from a 12-token warm-up to deep heaps of nearly 90 tokens. The 46 token faces, from stars and hearts to bells, keys and shells, are drawn in two colourways. Later levels mix both colourways of the same picture into one heap, so a star on yellow and a star on blue sit side by side and only one is the twin you want.
Each day also brings a daily heap of 68 to 80 tokens, the same for everyone. Clear it each day to build a streak. Only the daily heap posts a score to the leaderboard, the first time you clear it: a faster clear scores more, up to double. If you have gems, Hint rings a pair for you and Match lifts a pair for you. Neither lowers your score. Pile Pairs is free to play in your browser with no download or sign-up, and its art, music and sound effects are all made for the game.

How to Play
- Pick today's daily heap or the next level.
- Tap a token in the heap to pick it up. Any token that shows, even a thin edge, can be tapped.
- Tap its twin, the same picture in the same colour and size, and both clear away.
- Two that don't match add three seconds to the clock. Tap a picked token again to put it down.
- Lift the tokens on top to uncover the ones below.
- Clear every token to win. Clear the daily heap to post your score.
Tips
- Check the colour as well as the picture. On later levels the same picture comes in two colourways, and only one is the twin.
- Size is a clue too: twins are always the same size.
- Start from the top of the heap. Every token you lift there uncovers the most.
- Hunt for a token's twin before you pick it. A miss costs three seconds.
- Pairs found within a few seconds of each other build a combo. Spot two pairs before you tap.
FAQ
- Is Pile Pairs free?
- Yes. It is free to play in any modern browser, with no download and no sign-up.
- Can I get stuck?
- No. Every heap is built so that a matching pair always shows, whatever order you clear it in. There is no losing, only the clock.
- What is the daily heap?
- One heap of 68 to 80 tokens, the same for everyone that day. It changes at midnight UTC, and clearing it each day builds your streak. A cleared daily heap can't be played again for a second score.
- How is the score worked out?
- Only the daily heap scores, once, when you first clear it. A clear at or over the par time of 2.5 seconds per token is worth 5,000, and a faster one up to 10,000. Each miss adds three seconds to your time.
- Do the helpers cost gems?
- Yes. Hint rings a pair and Match lifts a pair for you, each for a fixed number of gems shown on the button. Neither one lowers your score, and every heap can be cleared without them.
- How is it different from Tile Trio and mahjong solitaire?
- There is no tray and no grid. Tokens lie in a loose heap, you match pairs instead of threes, and any token that shows can be tapped, not only the ones with nothing on top.
