About Euchre: Card Game
Euchre: Card Game is our own single-player version of North America's favourite partnership trick-taking game. You sit at the bottom of the table, your computer partner Nora sits across from you, and Earl and Wanda, the computer opponents, sit at your sides. The 24-card deck runs from the 9 to the ace in each suit, everyone gets five cards, and the dealer turns the next card face up.
Each hand starts with the calling. Going round from the dealer's left, each player may order the turned card's suit up as trump or pass; if you order it up, the dealer picks the card up and discards one. If all four pass, the card is turned down and each player in turn may name any other suit or pass. If everyone passes again the hand is thrown in and the next player deals, or you can switch on stick the dealer, which forces the dealer to name a suit. Whoever names trump may go alone, and their partner sits the hand out.
Then the five tricks are played. The jack of trump is the right bower and the jack of the same colour is the left bower, the two highest cards in the game, and the left bower counts as a trump, not as a card of its own suit. The game marks both bowers with a small badge as soon as trump is named, so you never have to work out which jack is which. Follow the suit led if you can; otherwise play anything. The highest trump, or else the highest card of the suit led, wins the trick. Cards you can't play are dimmed, a panel at the top shows trump, who named it and the tricks each side has taken, and when every card you hold must win, one tap takes the rest.
Scoring is the standard game. The side that named trump scores 1 point for three or four tricks and 2 points for all five, or 4 points for all five alone. If the makers take fewer than three they are euchred and the other side scores 2. The first side to 10 points wins, and after every hand a summary card shows who named trump, the tricks and the points.
Choose Easy, Medium or Hard opponents. Easy players make plain mistakes, calling on weak hands and sometimes throwing the wrong card; Medium players follow club conventions, ordering up on three tricks' worth, assisting the dealer, calling next in the second round, leading trump to their partner's call and going alone with a bower-led hand; Hard players deal out the unseen cards many times over and play every call and every card through to the end of the hand before they choose. Your partner always plays at its best, and no computer player ever sees your cards.
The daily game is a five-hand match, the same deals and the same dealer order for everyone that day, against Hard opponents with a Hard partner. Your daily score is 400 points for every point your side scores, minus 100 for every point the other side scores, never below zero, plus 100 if your side scores on all five hands. The best possible day is 8100, and your first finish of the day goes on the leaderboard. Undo is free in your own games and switched off in the daily game. The only paid item is a hint for 10 gems: it suggests the call, the discard or the card the Hard player would choose from your seat, and it never changes your score. Euchre: Card Game is free to play in your browser with no download or sign-up, and its cards, sound effects and music are all made for the game.

How to Play
- You sit at the bottom. Nora, across the table, is your partner; Earl and Wanda at your sides are your opponents. Everyone gets five cards and the dealer turns one card up.
- From the dealer's left, order the turned suit up as trump or pass. If everyone passes, the card is turned down and you may name any other suit or pass again.
- Whoever names trump can go alone: their partner sits out and a march scores 4 points.
- The jack of trump (right bower) and the jack of the same colour (left bower) are the two highest trumps. The left bower counts as a trump, not as its own suit.
- Follow the suit led if you can, otherwise play anything. The highest trump, or else the highest card of the suit led, wins the trick.
- The makers score 1 point for three or four tricks, 2 for all five, 4 for all five alone. Fewer than three and they are euchred: 2 points to the other side. First to 10 wins.
Tips
- Count the bowers: a hand with the right bower and two more trumps is usually worth ordering up.
- Assist your partner: when the dealer is your partner, order up a little lighter, because the turned card goes to their hand.
- In the second round, the suit of the same colour as the turned-down card (next) is often the best call from the first seat.
- When your partner named trump, lead a trump so the two of you can draw the opponents' trumps out.
- Go alone only with both bowers or a bower and the ace of trump, and keep an off-suit ace if you can.
FAQ
- Is Euchre: Card Game free?
- Yes. It is free to play in any modern browser, with no download and no sign-up.
- What are the right and left bowers?
- The jack of the trump suit is the right bower, the highest card in the hand. The jack of the other suit of the same colour is the left bower, the second highest, and it counts as a trump: you must play it to a trump lead, and it cannot be used to follow its own suit. The game badges both jacks as soon as trump is named.
- What happens if everyone passes twice?
- By default the hand is thrown in and the next player deals. You can switch on stick the dealer when you start a game, which forces the dealer to name a suit in the second round. The daily game always plays with stick the dealer, so all five hands are played.
- How strong are the computer players?
- There are three levels. Easy players make plain mistakes, Medium players follow the calling and leading conventions of a good club player, and Hard players deal out the cards they can't see many times and play every call and card through to the end before deciding. Your partner always plays at its best, and no computer player ever sees your cards.
- How is the daily game scored?
- Five hands, the same deals and dealer order for everyone that day, against Hard opponents with a Hard partner. Your score is 400 for every point your side scores minus 100 for every point the other side scores, never below zero, plus 100 if your side scores on all five hands. The best possible day is 8100. Your first finish of the day counts on the leaderboard, and there is no undo.
- What does a hint do?
- A hint costs 10 gems and suggests the call, the discard or the card the Hard player would choose from your seat. You never need one and it never changes your score.
